My current 7520 Photosmart is being replaced with a different model, but will take up residence in a closet for months, possibly up to a year or more.  Do I remove the cartridges and tape them up?  Do a printhead clean?  Wrap it in a plastic bag?  Absolutely nothing?  Thanks for the help!

There are two recommended methods.  If the closet will be in a standard heated/air conditioned room I would probably do the first.  If the printer will be subjected to wide temperature extremes I would suggest the second.  In either case, after a year of storage you may need to run some cleaning cycles or soak the printhead to recover printing.  I did have an extra Officejet Pro 8600 that I stored for just over a year in a spare room.  After storage I plugged it in and ran a test page, and was pleasantly surprised that no cleaning cycle was required beyond the automatic servicing at power-on.

  • The first method would be to turn off the printer and wait a minute to let the printheads properly park.  After all motion has stopped unplug the printer cables.  Store the printer away from heat extremes, a closet should be fine.  The cartridges need to have an adequate amount of ink and should be left in the printer. Do not block the cartridges vents as this would cause issues with changes in temperature or air pressure.
  • Alternately, remove the cartridges and the printhead and store them in a closed container as shown in the document here.  For long term storage it may be best to store the container in a refrigerator.  When it is time to restore the printer to operating condition remove the container from the fridge and let it sit for a few hours to come up to room temperature before installing in the printer.
