below information is from the link above - with a few edits

 

***BE SURE TO DISABLE IPv6***  - this will prevent system from updating firmware shortly after you downgrade....

 

 

open a command prompt and change directory to where to saved the above file, and then connect to your printer's IP address using the windows FTP command, just press enter for login and password and enter the "put" command, will go something like this:

 

d:\downloads>ftp 192.168.0.40
Connected to 192.168.0.40
220 Service ready for new user.
500 Command unrecognized or unimplemented
User (192.168.1.100:(none)):    (just press enter if no username)
331 Enter password.
Password: (just press enter if no password)
230 HP FTP Print Server Version 3.0.
ftp> put    (enter the command "put" - and then press enter"
Local file:  HP_LaserJet_Pro_M280_M281_Printer_series_20190419.rfu    (enter the name of the older firmware file - press enter)
Remote file HP_LaserJet_Pro_M280_M281_Printer_series_20190419.rfu     (enter the name of the older firmware file - press enter)

 

system will upload the firmware to the printer - be patient!!


200 Port command successful.
150 Open BINARY mode data connection.
226-Ready
226 Ready
ftp: 20881748 bytes sent in 10.47Seconds 1994.44Kbytes/sec.
ftp> bye

 

If done properly, your printer will take about 5 minutes to install the firmware and you will be able to use your 3rd party toners again.

HP_Laserjet_Pro_M180_M181_series_20200612.ENG.rfu - Google Drive

 

Install following direction

(use Method four: Update the firmware at the control panel using a USB connection)

(also make sure you don't have space in the printer or computer name referred to in the direction)
