HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I recently changed the yellow ink on my HP8740 printer. When I did, I got an error tied to the yellow ink which reads:

"There is a problem with the supply system. Try replacing the affected cartridge with a different, non-empty cartridge. If message reappears again, record message and contact HP."

I have already tried the following methods to solve the issue:

1) Reseat the ink cartridges

2) Clean the ink injection area with isopropyl alcohol

3) Turn the printer off and on again

4) Full reset of the printer to factory settings

I also attempted to run a "printer cleaning cycle," but the printer popped up the same error again.

I saw a post on this forum which recommended removing and cleaning the print head, but for the instructions it referenced a Facebook post, but only linked to the HP Facebook page, not the post in question. I figured out how to remove it, but wasn't sure which parts were safe to soak.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi @AmyDayNow

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for detailing everything you've already tried—that’s a thorough approach, and it’s unfortunate the error persists despite your efforts.

The message you're seeing typically points to a fault in the ink delivery system, often tied to the printhead or cartridge interface.

Since you've already reset, cleaned, and reseated components, the next steps involve deeper inspection and careful handling.

1. Inspect and Clean the Cartridge Vent and Contacts

Even if cleaned previously, it's worth revisiting with precision:

  • Remove the yellow cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean:
    • The copper contacts on the cartridge.
    • The contacts inside the printer where the cartridge seats.
  • Gently dry the area before reinserting the cartridge.

Avoid touching the ink nozzles directly, as they’re sensitive and easily damaged.

2. Check Cartridge Compatibility

Confirm the cartridge is:

  • Genuine HP and compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8740.
  • Not expired or previously used in another printer (some models require setup cartridges after printhead replacement).

You can verify cartridge compatibility on the HP 8740 supplies page.

3. Remove and Soak the Printhead (If Comfortable)

If you're confident in removing the printhead, soaking can help clear dried ink or residue:

  • Place the printhead nozzle-side down in a shallow dish with distilled water (not isopropyl alcohol).
  • Soak for 5–10 minutes, then gently blot dry with a lint-free cloth.
  • Avoid submerging the electrical contacts.
  • Reinstall and allow the printer to sit powered off for 10 minutes before restarting.

This method is safe if done carefully. If unsure, skip this and proceed to the next step.

4. Update Firmware

Even if the printer seems current, manually installing the latest firmware can help:

5. Consider Printhead Replacement

If the error persists after cleaning and firmware update:

  • The printhead may be failing or electrically damaged.
  • You can explore replacement options via HP Support Contact or check availability of part M0H91A (OfficeJet Pro 8740 printhead).

Let me know how the cleaning and firmware update go. You're handling this with care and persistence—let’s keep working toward a resolution.
