I replaced cartridges a couple of days ago and it showed they were empty, so I replaced them all with HP cartridges. And haven't been able to print, it's stuck in this error. I have turned on & off multiple times. Also previously I would install real HP cartridges and suddenly half way through it's ink life it would say "non-hp carts installed" What can I do?

Hi @ADesigns2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this is, especially after installing genuine HP cartridges and then receiving messages such as “Non-HP chip or circuitry detected” or cartridge-related errors during normal use.

This issue is commonly related to cartridge contact communication, firmware detection, damaged cartridge circuitry, or the printer detecting a cartridge authentication problem.

Please try the following steps carefully and in order.

Step 1: Remove and Reinstall the Cartridges

  1. Turn the printer ON.
  2. Open the cartridge access door.
  3. Remove all cartridges.
  4. Check each cartridge for:
    • Protective tape fully removed,
    • No damage to the copper contacts or chip area,
    • Correct HP cartridge number for your printer model.
  5. Reinsert each cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.

Step 2: Clean Cartridge and Printer Contacts

  1. Remove the affected cartridges again.
  2. Using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water:
    • Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges,
    • Then clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  3. Allow everything to dry for 5 minutes.
  4. Reinstall the cartridges and test again.

Step 3: Perform a Full Printer Reset

  1. Keep the printer powered ON.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the printer and power it back ON.

Step 4: Update Printer Firmware

Firmware updates can improve cartridge communication and recognition.
