So I have been happy with my printer for 13 months. No problems and it merrily uses compatible cartridges.
Suddenly an update appears on my printer. It recommends I do the update for security reasons. I do the update but now I get an error message 'Supply memory Error'. Nothing will remove this.

I feel cheated that an update is now forcing me to throw away hundreds of pounds of toner. Disgusting that an update should do this. It is obviously a deliberate attempt by HP to force own label toner use.

It is also hugely 'coincidental' that this has happened just after the warranty runs out on my printer...

I would like to roll back the firmware but having spent 2 days scouring the internet for a solution, this doesn't seem possible.

HP you should be ashamed of yourselves. I will take to twitter to vent my anger unless this gets fixed. At least I can prevent a few other people falling into you trap.

@Johncrapprinter, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Are you using non-HP ink toners?

HP cannot guarantee the functionality of these ink toners. It may or may not work.

There is no option to downgrade the printer firmware. If you are using non-HP ink toners and getting this error, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for further assistance.

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

I am using third party toners and they worked before the firmware update. I need to roll back to 20200612. I don't believe it is legal in the EU to disallow third party toners.

Actually you are wrong because a support tech from HP called me and helped roll back the firmware today. My printer now works again with the non HP cartridges.

This therefore must be possible for all the others with the same issue.

Hi my warranty is 6 months out of date, I have had the printer 1 and half years now. Can you please advise me how I can use this printer again that I paid £300 for or shall I just put it in the bin? Very disappointed , big companies always win though. Disgusting.

I have a HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP M281FDW which after the November 2020 firmware update would no longer allow me to print using the generic print cartridges I had just replaced.

After some online research it appears HP has done this repeatedly with firmware upgrades over the years to prevent owners of their printers from using generic ink cartridges (a big dis-service to their customers IMO).  I love HP printers - I do, but the ink cartridges are just too expensive for most working people.  After reading the HP employee responses, I was even more dismayed. Come on guys. Be kind to your loyal customers...they're not shelling out $59 for some cheap printer...like me, they're buying your flagships!  You know the answer and its simple - reinstall the earlier firmware.  Firmware downgrades are available here:

Make sure to change the settings on your printer to allow updates before flashing the firmware.

Once installed, you can disable firmware updates.
