I was trying to set up a smart tank 651 printer and I filled all of the ink but it's saying the black ink is not full so it won't print or let me finish setup. Restarting it multiple times has not helped.

Hi @JohnKF,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Smart Tank 651 printer is indicating that the black ink tank is not full despite being filled, and it won’t complete the setup or print, this issue can be frustrating. Here’s a detailed troubleshooting guide to help resolve this problem:

1. Check Ink Level Sensors:

  • Confirm Ink Levels: Make sure the black ink tank is filled to the correct level. Refer to the printer's manual or the ink tank markings for the correct fill line.
  • Check for Air Bubbles: Ensure there are no air bubbles in the ink tank that could affect the ink level sensor. Gently tap the tank to release any air bubbles.
  • Clean Sensors: If you can access the ink tank sensors, gently clean them with a lint-free cloth. Be careful not to damage any components.

2. Reinstall Ink Tanks:

  • Turn Off Printer: Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open Ink Access: Open the ink tank access door.
  • Remove Black Ink Tank: Carefully remove the black ink tank.
  • Reinstall Tank: Reinstall the black ink tank, ensuring it is securely seated in its slot.
  • Check Alignment: Ensure the tank is properly aligned with the printer’s ink chamber. Misalignment can sometimes cause detection issues.

3. Perform Printer Reset:

  • Turn Off Printer: Power off the printer.
  • Unplug Power: Unplug the power cord from the printer.
  • Wait: Leave it unplugged for at least 1 minute.
  • Plug Back In: Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.
  • Access Menu: On the printer’s control panel, navigate to “Setup” > “Printer Maintenance” > “Restore Defaults” or similar option.
  • Confirm Reset: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the factory reset.

4. Update Printer Firmware:

  • Visit HP Website: Go to the HP support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model.
  • Install Updates: Follow the instructions to download and install the latest firmware. Updating the firmware can resolve many setup and ink detection issues.

5. Clean Printhead::

  • Access Maintenance Menu: On the printer’s control panel, navigate to “Setup” > “Printer Maintenance” > “Clean Printhead”.
  • Follow Instructions: Run the printhead cleaning cycle to clear any potential blockages or residue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
