HP OfficeJet 5230 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I have the same issue with Officejet 5230 and MacOS 12 Monterey.

I used to be able to print duplex on A5 paper with long edge binding scaling down from an A4 sized pdf document. After updating to the latest driver, it doesn't work any more.

I got this message: The Two-Sided option, Long-edge binding, is not available when the destination paper size is set to A5.

I created a resized pdf document in A5 to avoid the scaling. That didn't help.

I used the solution discussed in this forum and created a custom paper size setting. If I enable two sided printing in the printer dialogue I get now this message: The Two-Sided option, Long-edge binding, is not available when the destination paper size is set to Custom. So I leave two sided printing off, and turn it on in the regular settings.

This allowed me to print duplex on A5 paper, but now the page orientation is wrong. Every second page is flipped on its head - the printer basically uses short edge binding all the time.

I can't find a way to get it to work correctly. I tried both long edge and short edge binding, but the result didn't change at all.

Switching Reverse page orientation in the printer dialogue on or off also didn't change anything as well.

I really need this function for my work in book publishing and it is very frustrating that it doesn't work anymore, when it used to work so flawlessly.
