HP DeskJet Plus 4140 All-in-One Printer

The power light, the ink alert light, the information light and the resume light are all flashing fast.  The display led is flashing and shows a big E and a smaller E in it

Hi @JohnAP2, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Your HP DeskJet Plus 4140 is flashing like a disco ball 🪩 with its power, ink, information, and resume lights all blinking along with a cryptic "E" on the display? Sounds like it's trying to tell you something! Let's decode its message and get it back to printing.

1. Power Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on.
  4. Check if the error persists.

2. Check for Paper Jams

  1. Open the input and output trays.
  2. Remove any jammed paper carefully.
  3. Check inside the printer (cartridge area and rear access door).
  4. Close everything properly and restart the printer.

3. Check Ink Cartridges

  1. Open the ink cartridge door.
  2. Remove both ink cartridges and inspect them for leaks or damage.
  3. Wipe the electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth.
  4. Reinsert the cartridges securely and close the door.
  5. If the error persists, try replacing the cartridges with new HP genuine ones.

4. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

  1. Press and hold the Information (i) and Cancel (X) buttons together for 5 seconds.
  2. Release both buttons and wait for the printer to reset.
  3. The printer should restart automatically.

5. Reinstall Printer Drivers

  1. If connected to a PC, uninstall the printer from Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Download and install the latest drivers from HP's official website.
  4. Set up the printer again.

6. Perform a Hard Reset

If the issue continues:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. While holding the Power button, press the Cancel (X) button 10 times.
  4. Release both buttons and turn the printer back on.

Hopefully, one of these tricks will bring your DeskJet Plus 4140 back to its senses. 😅

Take care and have a good day. 🙂
