HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This is a HP mess. I like the OfficeJet Pro 7740, but HP cannot make updates work without an error. I was able to download the latest firmware vresion, but instead of allowing one to enter the printer's IP it has to search for the printer. Of course, it comes back with a cannot find a HP printer. The printer is there as verified with a PI{NG command.

Does anyone know a fix for this? I have shut off the "recommended" auto update.

@FramingHammer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Since your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is not being detected during the firmware update process despite being accessible via ping, here are a few troubleshooting steps to try.

Update via Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If the printer has a web interface:

  1. Open a web browser and enter the printer’s IP address in the address bar.
  2. Navigate to Web Services or Printer Update/Firmware Update.
  3. Check for updates and install them manually.

Manually Update via USB (Best Method)

If the network update fails, try updating via USB:

  1. Download the firmware from HP’s support website.
  2. Connect the printer directly to your computer using a USB cable.
  3. Run the firmware update file and check if it detects the printer over USB.
  4. Proceed with the update.

Disable SNMP in Printer Settings

Some HP printers fail to be detected if SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) is enabled:

  1. Open your printer properties (on your PC).
  2. Go to Ports > Configure Port.
  3. Uncheck SNMP Status Enabled and save changes.
  4. Retry the update.

Ensure Printer is Set to a Static IP

If your printer's IP changes frequently, it might not be detected:

  1. Go to the printer’s web interface (EWS).
  2. Set a Static IP Address (matching the one detected by ping).
  3. Try running the firmware update again.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

HP provides a tool that might resolve detection issues:

  1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP’s website.
  2. Run it and follow the troubleshooting steps.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
