Both printing problems now resolved.
Reinstalling the printer software resolved the truncation of content, but only after the second try, which included (as the first had not) uninstalling the existing software and trashing the app itself.
The unprinted horizontal lines that then appeared have now also gone, once I cleaned both print cartridges (as instructed) with Q-tips and distilled water.
THANKS, and...... WHEW!

"It's Baaaaack".
The solution provided by Rainbow 23: Reset the Printer; Uninstall/Trash all printer software; Reinstall; then download the latest driver, wrked - for a while....maybe for a dozen documents. Then yesterday it broke again - printing starts at top of page OK, but with initial inch or so of content truncated.
I repeted the entire reset procedure - didn't help.
The document that broke the system was a greeting card, with lots of color graphics, printed "Best", on 110# Card Stock (I've been doing this for years without problems). In wrestling with the problem, I reprinted the card in B/W Draft on plain paper. That worked - sometimes. The amount of truncation seems to vary with the amount of color and with Best vs Draft (maybe slowing down the synchronization with paper feed?). Just now I tried printing the NY Times crossword puzzle in B/W draft, on plain paper. Top inch of content was lopped off.
Seems as if the printer thinks the paper is in position when it's not, so starts printing.... then, a short time later, the paper is actually fed. If that could be the problem, are there instructions for how to clean/lubricate/reset the feed and sensing mechanisms?
I realize I may have to replace the printer, but if the problem isn't mechanical, I'd then have two OK printers that didn't work, and I'd feel pretty stupid.
My Mac also has a problem: the middle keys in the next to bottom row of the laptop's keyboard don't work, so I'm using a wireless keyboard; everything else seems OK. Do you think whateve's causing that flaw with the keys could cascade into interfering with the printer's functioning?)

Hi @dickns33,
Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query. I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that you are facing issues with your HP ENVY 5530 all-in-one printer wherein the top inch of the page still gets omitted.
This could be a hardware issue with the unit.
Let's go through a few steps that may help to fix this issue.
I suggest that you update the firmware from the link: Firmware Update
If the issue still persists, please contact HP phone support from this link: www.hp.com/contacthp
You may select the country and type the product# of the unit and then follow the on-screen instructions to contact HP phone support.
Let me know if this works.
You have a good day ahead.

I downloaded the firmware upgrade from the link you specied ["I suggest that you update the firmware from the link: Firmware Update"] but that gave me an exe. file for Windows. Is there a corresponding link for my MacBook Pro?

RE: Printing starts where it should on page, but with top inch or so of content omitted.
PROGRESS! diagnosis-wise..... Got a new computer, all software updated, and the printing problem persists. Conclusion is that the flaw is in the printer itself. No surprise, inasmuch as the problem's been somewhat intemittant, which is more likely to be the case with a mechanical glitch (eg loose drive or dirty sensor) than due to software. And indeed, evidence now is that the flaw is indeed in the PAPER FEED.
I have for years been printing greeting cards (lots of graphics) for family & friends on card stock paper, with no problems till the current glitch came along. Situation at present is that I can successfully print a greeting card (or whatever) on regular paper, but when I try printing the self-same greeting card file on card stock, the truncation occurs (even if I load the paper tray with just a single sheet ).
So - DOES HP OFFER AN INSTRUCTION FOR CLEANING/MAINTAINING the PAPER FEED MECHANISM?
If not, I'll have to buy a replaceme printer for my ENVY 5530, with which I'm otherwise quite happy and for which I still have ink cartridges. Do you have a recommendation as to which printer I should buy? NOTE: I'm not a high-volume user; I print maybe a dozen sheets a week.
