I had a similar issue, but my solution was easier. Since I'm using OS X 10.11.6, the printer software, called HP Utility,  was already installed on my Mac. I connected the printer to my Mac using the USB cable. Then I opened the HP Utility and the printer connected via USB in the devices column on the left. On the right side of the page, there was an icon labled Wireless Setup. I just cliced on that and it created another device for the wireless setup to the same printer. I then went to the Mac's System Preferences and added this wireless version of the printer as a new one. The only tricky part is that it's hard to tell the difference between the wired (USB) and wireless configurations in the Printers column. In my case the Deskjet 3050A J611 series is the wireless and the HP Diskjet 3050A J611 series is the wired (USB) version. In other words, my wired printer starts with "HP" and the wireless does not.
