What does a "?" symbol on the printer display indicate?   I ran the HP troubleshooter and it eliminated all typical issues and responded with Unknown Printer Error.    Does the question mark mean the printer is beyond repair?    I don't see the question mark symbol in my User Manual.

Hi @VinceZag,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A "?" symbol on the HP ENVY Photo 7855 All-In-One Printer display generally indicates an error or a need for attention that isn't covered by the usual error messages. It doesn't necessarily mean the printer is beyond repair but suggests an issue that needs further investigation. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this issue.

Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.

Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can check for updates via the printer's control panel or the HP website.

Inspect the Cartridges: Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges to make sure they are properly seated. Also, check for any debris or damage.

Reset the Printer:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the printer while it is still on.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the power source and then reconnect it to the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on.

Run Diagnostics: Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which is a free tool that helps diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems.

Check Network Connection: If your printer is connected to a network, ensure it is properly connected. You may need to reconnect it to your Wi-Fi network.

Factory Reset: If the issue persists, you may consider performing a factory reset.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Alden4.  I appreciate your suggestions.  I tried each of your ideas but the "?" symbol persistently returns.    What gives me hope is that I'm able to print a demo page from the printer's LED screen.  It also prints Printer Status Report and will copy a document that I manually place of the copier glass.  The printer works and prints fine except when I try to print from my computer, it gives an ambiguous reply: "Printer Error"  without any further clue what's wrong.  I've reinstalled the HP Software on my computer and run the HP diagnostics without success.   Is it worthwhile taking it to a Best Buy or similar repair shop for further analysis or paying for an HP support person to work with me to try to locate the issue?   I hate to give up on a working device if the issue can be identified for less than the cost of a new machine.   Thoughts?
