I recently purchased an Office Jet Pro 8130e printer. I followed all of the start-up instructions and when I try to print I get this error message; "Use SETUP" cartridges. I've restarted the computer, replaced the cartridges and I still get the error message. Please let me know what I should do next to get this printer working properly.

Hi @66209,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The "Use SETUP cartridges" error typically occurs because the printer is expecting the setup cartridges included in the box during the initial setup process. These cartridges are preloaded with specific firmware for initializing the printer. Here’s what you can do to resolve the issue.
Confirm You Are Using the Setup Cartridges
- Check that you are installing the cartridges labeled "SETUP." These cartridges are different from standard replacement cartridges and are only used during the initial setup.
Reinsert the Setup Cartridges
- Turn off the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door, remove the cartridges, and carefully reinstall them. Ensure they click into place properly.
Perform a Hard Reset on the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 2-3 minutes.
- Reconnect the power cable and turn the printer back on.
- Check if the error persists.
Ensure Proper Firmware Installation
- When setting up the printer for the first time, it’s crucial to follow the HP Smart app instructions. If the firmware installation was interrupted, the printer may not recognize non-setup cartridges.
- Open the HP Smart app and complete the setup process to ensure the printer firmware initializes correctly.
Verify Printer Region
- Some printers are region-specific, and the setup cartridges must match the printer’s firmware region. If you purchased the printer and cartridges in different regions, this could cause the error.
Factory Reset (if all else fails)
- If the error persists, you can try performing a factory reset. Note that this will erase any customized settings:
- Press and hold the WiFi and Cancel buttons on the printer simultaneously for about 5 seconds to reset.
- Follow the setup instructions again using the HP Smart app.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
