I am trying to get a printer running and updated. It works and prints a page when connected directly with wire usb, but not when trying to print remotely, it doesnt work with bluetooth, and the bigger problem is when i use Scan Doctor software on my pc from hp.com. it gives me a message when i click troubleshoot on the Scan doctor, it says the device manager has an error, it says restart your computer and run the program again, but it doesnt work. it gives the same message, "error with device manager", it doesnt give me anything else to do. this is on a slightly older laserjet hp printer.

Hi @User32434234234,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "device manager error" in the HP Print and Scan Doctor can sometimes be due to driver conflicts, outdated software, or a misconfiguration with Windows settings. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue and get your HP LaserJet printer running smoothly on both USB and wireless connections.

Uninstall and Reinstall the Printer Driver:

  • Open Device Manager by pressing Windows + X and selecting Device Manager.
  • Expand the Printers or Print Queues section, find your printer, right-click, and select Uninstall device.
  • Disconnect the USB cable, then restart your computer.
  • Visit HP’s support site and download the latest driver for your LaserJet printer model.
  • Run the installer, connect the printer only when prompted, and complete the installation.

Run the Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot and select Printer.
  • Run the troubleshooter to see if it detects any errors with the printer configuration.

Update USB and Bluetooth Drivers:

  • In Device Manager, look for Universal Serial Bus controllers (for USB issues) or Bluetooth if trying to connect via Bluetooth.
  • Right-click each entry and choose Update driver.

Disable and Re-enable Print Spooler Service:

  • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.
  • Type services.msc and press Enter.
  • Scroll to Print Spooler, right-click, and select Restart.

Check Network Settings for Remote Printing:

  • Ensure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
  • If using WiFi, make sure the wireless light on the printer is solid, indicating it’s connected.
  • If issues persist, try connecting the printer via WiFi Direct if supported.

Retry HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • After following the above steps, try running the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool again.
  • If the error persists, try reinstalling HP Print and Scan Doctor directly from HP’s support site, ensuring you have the latest version.

These steps should help resolve most device manager or communication issues with the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
