Can you  print just black in the Photosmart c4480 without installing a color cartridge?

Yes,

You may use Ink-backup mode to print using a single cartridge only, on;ly printing from the computer is possible then and any printer task such as copy or scan from the printer screen will not work.

 

You may find Ink-backup mode information on page 77 of the printer user guide below:
