I just solved exactly that problem in the feeder I placed a Walgreens lense wipe on top of my paper being scanned. Ran it through noting that the wife  was only slightly damp from the package. I placed it on the far edge of the paper which both pushed through the wipe and cleaned the spot causing the line to appear in copies and scans. My HP model is the Office jet pro 6978.

This solution(to return the product on guarantee  is not a solution as it does not solve the problem. My contribution is based on actually finding a solution. I feel good anyway....
