What print server model do you have? On the working XP machine what is the port setting? Does the print server provide two-way communication?

Good Morning Bob,
I followed your instructions, took out the Duplexer, cleaned the 4 brass prongs as well as the contact points inside the printer. Nothing looked bent or out of place, however I did notice that there was a lot of what looked like "ink" residue all over the prongs and it even seemed to have leaked into the bottom of the duplexer. Not sure if this is normal, or not, and we have always used genuine HP ink cartridges. Turned the Printer off and back on. Unfortunately, after doing the clearning piece, and re-installing the Duplexer, it still is not recognized by the Printer. Does this mean I am in the market now for a Duplexer? I have never used Ebay, so not sure about that option. Will this be my cheapest solution? One child in college, and another a year away, so "cheap" is the operative word here.... 🙂 Thanks again Bob for your assistance with this.

I have bought a duplexer that fits this model (for my Photosmart 2610) from eBay, they usually go relatively cheap. You may also find a suitable unit in a thrift store or garage sale. The duplexer is the same as that for the Photosmart 2610, 2710 and the Deskjet 6500 series, as well as probably a few others. A google search turned up quite a few. This one looks cheap enough to risk that the problem may be in the printer.
One thing to try would be to gently bend the pins so they put more pressure on the contact. Also, if there was lots of aerosol ink covering things it would not hurt to remove the duplexer and clean the contacts again as well as the small circuit board they are mounted to.

As I noted in my first post the print server is a linksys wireless-G PrintServer with multifunction support WPSM54G V1.1. The port is exactly the same on the XP machine. DOT4_001. Yes, the print server supports two-way communication.

My printer model is the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Premier. I ordered it from HP in August of 2009.
My operating system is Window 7 Ultimate.
The printer has the automatic duplexer. When it prints, it prints the first page in its entirety but when it turns over the page I only get the bottom 3 inches printed and there is a crease 4 inches from the bottom of the page. On the screen it says, "Printing cancelled".
I checked the duplexer and there is nothing that I can see that is obstructing it.
Thanks for your help.

This has gotten pretty far afield from Duplex printing issues. I would suggest starting a new thread for this topic.

The duplexer actually prints the back side from the bottom up. I would suggest removing the duplexer and opening it up and looking for any obstructions. Replace the duplexer on the printer and make sure it is snapped securely in place.

I still can not print 2-sided with my photosmart c7280 All-In-One printer. I am running a usb to my printer on Gateway 64 bit., Model NV79. When I go to the paper saving options, I have no list to select automatic from two-sided printing. I am running windows 7. Thanks, Gary

Check the first post in this thread. Read and follow the first paragraph that says:
"No option for two-sided printing. The selection for automatic two sided printing may be grayed out, or only manual duplexing is offered. This typically occurs because the duplexer is not recognized as installed, or the driver may default to not installed. To correct this in Vista do the following: go to Start, Control Panel, Printers, right-click on the printer, Run as Administrator, Properties, (continue), Device Settings, Installable Options, set the "Two Sided Duplex Unit" to installed, OK. For Windows 7 the method is similar: go to Start, Devices and Printers, right click on the printer, Printer properties, Device settings, Installable Options, set the "Two Sided Duplex Unit" to installed, OK. [Edit] HP has provided the page here that details how to enable the duplexer in XP, Vista and Windows 7. You may need to apply this fix as a user with administrative privileges."

I saw this post after I entered my own under "other printing"
Here it is as a reply as requested.
HP4600
I recently install the PCL6 Universal print driver.
The printer is connected to a Windows 7, 64 bit machine.
The printer is used on the Local area network by a Windows xp professional machine and a Vista Ultimate, 23 bit machine.
Given the mix of operating systems, I think this driver was my only choice.
My problem is that any color text shows up as black on the printer. All color graphics, pictures prints fine.
Under preferences, advanced, printer features, the "Print All Text as black" field is disabled.
All else works great with this driver.
Any ideas??
