We have an LJ4200n that we use for the bulk of our low-cost printing. It is served on our network. We just migrated from XP SP3 to Win7. Under XP, the printer would auto-duplex. Under Win7, our 4200n reports that the duplexer's installed, but the Printing Preferences | Finishing dalog box | Document Options only shows "Print on both sides (manually)".

Do you have any suggestions for enabling auto-duplexing?

Thanks!

As described in the first post in the thread the duplexer must be set to "installed", the default is not installed.  It may be that the driver ignores the configuration reported by the LJ 4200n.  You can manually enable this as follows:  go to Start, Devices and Printers, right click on the Laserjet 4200n, Printer Properties, Device Settings and set the duplexer to "installed".  While you are there also configure any other trays or accessories, then click Apply.  After that you can open the Printing Preferences, two-sided printing will be available in the Finishing tab.

Printer properties what a simple fix.

I upgraded to Windows 7 in October 2010 and have been printing two sided manually, and looking for a solution ever since.  I read your solution today September 28, 2011 and it worked!!  (Eleven months)

Thank-you

I'm having the same problem as theantijack (posted 12-10-2010 04:45 PM), although my environment is a little different:

"I'm trying to use an HP Laser Jet P1102w on a wireless connection to a 32-bit Windows 7 machine.  Originally, I had it connected via USB, and the manual duplex worked fine.  After setting up with my wireless network, the options to manually duplex are still there, and the printer acts as if it wants to print in duplex mode when I set it to do so, but I no longer get the prompt on my screen to place the paper in tray 1, then click to continue printing.  The printer just sits there waiting for input I can no longer provide, until I cancel the print job.  Also, my system tray icon stays up, telling me I have a print job waiting, but there is nothing in the queue or spooled."

I have P1102w and I'm on Win-7 64 bit, and it seems to print fine over wireless -- even wakes up after going to sleep -- except (as with theantijack) for manual duplex, when it prints the first side(s) and then just sits without prompting me to continue (and the job is no longer in the queue).

Unlike theantijack (who later posted about switching to USB from wireless), I don't have the option of printing via USB: I have to get this to work wirelessly.

I updated to latest firmware.  I'm currently using the (default) driver "HP LaserJet Professional P1102w," updated to latest/2011-09-20.  Bi-directional is turned on.

Any other ideas?

With my Officejet 6500 709a printer, the two-sided option is available. When I try to print a pdf file, two-sided printing occurs, but the order of the pages is all mixed up. Today, I installed the latest HP driver, but the problem still exists. If I print the pdf file one-sided, printing occurs with no problems.

Hi,

My problem is that I can't even duplex print MANUALLY.  I've got an HP1020 that was duplexing happily on previous Win versions (XP, Vista etc).  Now I've got a new laptop with 7 64 and the problem is that no dialogue box comes up .. ever! e.g., if the printer is out of paper and when I'm duplex printing, at the point it should tell me to put the paper back through .. nothing, zip, silence.  If the printer runs out of paper full stop, no dialogue box ever comes up telling me to put new paper in.  It just sits there, obstinately silent.  The only way I can get the printer to shake itself out of slumber is if I shutdown the PC, turn it back on and then it will carry on as before (e.g. printing the 2nd side of the duplex), as if awakening from a dream :).

I've been through every possible setting to see what I'm missing but can't find anything appropriate.  The only reference I can find to messages, is under Printer Properties > Configure > Status Messages .. and it is already set to on.

I've downloaded the latest driver and reinstalled it several times as that seems the obvious solution .. but no luck.

Tearing my hair out with this so any help very much appreciated.

Duplexer for 9800 printer is not working. I was able to execute step 1 for windows 7, but was unable to execute step 2, after selecting Printer Preferences.  I could not find the "Features" tab in order to select the "Paper Saving Options' etc.

How do I locate the "Features" tab??????????

It works for me...  After enabling the duplexer you should have an option in the printing shortcuts or from the features tab.  I just checked both of those here, see the screen shots below.

So I was having problems with my new LJ P1102w  (see above for details: no "turn over the pages now" message when duplexing; and then it just started to continue to print ad nauseam -- wouldn't let me delete from the queue while the printer was on, had to tun off the printer to stop it).

I decided to start over.  I delete the devices from device manager, then I ran uninstall from the printer-specific menu in Windows' All Programs, rebooted, reinstalled.  Now everythings works.  (By the way, I had uninstalled and reinstalled the devices and drivers several times -- that didn't help at all; in my case, it was something with the other software that was causing the problems.)

So my advice to you if you're having issues: Uninstall everything you can related to the printer and install from scratch.  If it doesn't function as expected (e.g., no message to "turn the pages over now" when duplexing), try it again.  It should work, eventually.

(Far cry from the old HP, where it always worked every time. 😞 )

Duplex is still not working.

I confirmed that duplex is installed under "Devise Settings".

Under "Printer Shortcuts" I selected Duplex Printing and when I select the drop down box with the Off message, Automatic does not appear for me to select.

Also, when I click on "Finishing" I do not see the same screen that you sent for me to view

The option to print on both sides under "Document Options" does not appear

What does appear is "Pages Per Sheet & Posters".

What is interesting is that the duplex did work for me in the past with all of my current connections to the computer.

Is it possible that there is some driver recognition problem. If yes, how do I correct it?

I have a Windows 7, 64 bit system.
