Hi @msjanew

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you. Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your MAC.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on MAC

Check the connectivity between the printer and the MAC

If you are using a USB cable, make sure the cable is directly connected between the MAC and the printer.

The use of a USB hub is not recommended. Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your MAC.

Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the MAC?

  • Check if the printer is getting recognized by your MAC:
  1. From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac.
  2. Click System Report.
  3. Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB.

USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus

Install the printer using AirPrint driver

1.) Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

2.) Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, If your printer is listed, click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer.

3.) If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button at the bottom of the list.

4.) Click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name.

5.) Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.

6.) Try to print.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Like others on this forum since late March 2020, after years of service my HP 8600 gives the error message ¨Waiting for printer to become available.¨ when printing. It scans fine. It also prints the test page fine. The HP8600 is connected to my laptop with a USB cable, not wireless. Others have recently posted since late March 2020 with the same problem.

I followed the advice offered below on another thread. It failed in two ways:

1) When I tried to update the HP8600 firmware with OJP8600_N911g-n_1829A.dmg I got the error message ¨This Firmware does not contain upgrades for your device.¨

2) When I tried to ¨Click the Use or Print Using menu, select AirPrint in the pop-up menu. Then click Add.¨ as instructed in the last directions below, the pop-up menu DID NOT have AirPrint as a selection, only HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 as a choice.

There seems to be a Firmware or Driver update that is needed? What should I do now?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @TheBigKahuna

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

  • Did you check if the printer is getting detected under USB devices as shown in my post?
  • Do you have an Anti-virus program installed?

If you are not able to add the printer as AirPrint, have you checked for any pending updates on the MAC?

If the issue persists, click here to download the printer driver from the HP Support site.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Kumar, thanks for your help. Here are my responses in Italics.

Hi @TheBigKahuna

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

  • Did you check if the printer is getting detected under USB devices as shown in my post?

Yes, but the HP8600 is listed under USB3.0, NOT USB2.0. Is this a problem?

  • Do you have an Anti-virus program installed?

Not that I know of.

If you are not able to add the printer as AirPrint, have you checked for any pending updates on the MAC?

Yes, I checked for pending MAC updates. There are none.

If the issue persists, click here to download the printer driver from the HP Support site.

I have re-downloaded  and installed the drivers. The scanner works on the driver test page. But the printer continues to get stuck on ¨Waiting . . .¨ . I

nterestingly enough, when I print the Diagnostics page using the HP Utility program (System Preferences, Open Printer Utility, Print Quality Diagnostics) the HP8600 prints the Print Quality Diagnostic Page without problems.

What should I do?

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

@TheBigKahuna, thank you for the response. I appreciate your efforts and patience.

MAC is backward compatible with USB 2.0. So it is fine if the printer is connected to a USB 3.0 port.

Let us try these steps:

Uninstall all HP drivers

Refer to this document to know how.

Repair the Disk Permissions on the Mac:

  • Close all applications.
  • On the Apple menu bar, click Go, click Applications and then click Utilities.
  • Double-click Disk Utility.
  • Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left.
  • Click Verify and then Repair Disk Permissions.

Click here to download the printer driver. Try printing.

Let me know how this goes.

Thanks, Kumar.

I cleared all the old HP Drivers by trashing them. I also check the HDD but there was no ¨Verify and Partition¨ option. There was a First Aid option which I used and it showed no problems.

I then download the driver again and tried to print. Same problem with ¨Waiting for printer . . . ¨ . The scan function seems to work fine as before.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Kumar. I followed the link you suggested and entered in my printer's serial number, etc. It then led me to a ¨How can we help you?¨ page where the only option I have is ¨Visit the HP Support Community ¨ which leads me in a circular ring back to these forum pages.

So it seems that HP support is limited now in spite of your good efforts. Perhaps not surprising given that my printer is both out of production and out of warranty. But just for your information because you have tried so hard to help: maybe it would be worthwhile to let people know that if their printer is out of production and out of warranty, there may be a limit to what can be done after they follow your advice.

I will begin the search for a new printer.

A very genuine thanks for your help and your concern.

Best wishes

Wayne
