HP officejet 820
macOS 10.12 Sierra

We have used out HP officejet 8620 without incident for years.

Recently all our devices (various mac computers) simultaneously began to have trouble connecting to printer and printing. Access to the printer via the wifi network by typing in the IP also is problematic.

I have reset router, restored HP printer to factory default, restarted computers, restarted printer. These fixes sometimes work for a short time, but then, invariably, if anyone wishes to print, scan or access printer controls via IP, I have to manually re-connect the printer to the wifi network either by turning on/off the printer, or using the "wireless settings" menu on the HP touchscreen and manually resetting the wifi connection by pressing the "on/off" button on the "wireless" menu line. (One quirk. I touch it "off" then "on" - it goes blue for a few seconds, then turns off by itself again. When I turn it "on" a second time (usually), the blue light indicating a wireless connection flashes about 12 times and then everything connects.

I tried selecting the "enable IPv4 only" via the General network protocols on the "web control" page but that did not help.

I've checked for all printer updates.

Thoughts from a Non-Mac user...

If assigning a static IP address (for example, in the Embedded Web Server - EWS) does not work,

If the problem is wide-spread (all devices affected),

The underlying cause might be:

  • The router is bad or in need of a firmware update - check the router's home / support page for updates
  • Although rare, the wireless radio on the printer might be going bad
  • There may be a conflict - perhaps one of the devices is trying to use the same IP address
  • There may be a conflict - one of the devices might be interfering (game box, TV, phone, "something") - Disconnect the devices and then connect one at a time to test

Try connecting using Ethernet - if that doesn't work, take another look at the router logs to see if anything looks suspicious.

Finally, if you have never done so, take a look at updating the printer firmware (if listed as available for your OS)

Thanks Dragon-Fur,

Assigning a static IP makes the EWS work consistently, but actually makes the printer not work at all.

I downloaded both the firmware up date and the updated printer software, but neither could find the printer.

The thing that is strange is the printer works consistently if I simply reset it on the HP touchscreen-  but only for whatever jobs are in the Queue. Then it needs to be reset.

I'll see if I can find any kind of update for my router.  I just don't think there's been any change to our system (except whatever automatic updates the router might have received) but all devices in the house that have used the HP to print have the same problem.

Strange.

I'm going to dig back in to try to fix this when I'm back homse this evening if anyone has any addtional thoughts - although after more than an hour or two it's gonna be worth it to just buy a new printer.

It won't be an HP,  however, although I've liked this printer. The HP official support is too automated and not helpful enough.

So, if anyone has any last-ditch last ideas, let me know.

Thanks in advance.
