All our 9015 all in ones have experienced the same issue this week. Nothing HP has suggested works. Judging by the number of units experiencing this problem it certainly appears to be a problem created by HP. I would hope that HP would develop a solution that resolves the issue.

Same problem and I cannot even get to the update setting on my OfficeJet Pro 9010. I even got a 100% downloading and then the error message. Each time I hit 'OK' the printer recycles and then will attempt the download again. Clearly a problem at HP.

So I finally got to turn off the auto updates by going through the HP Smart app. I couldn't do this directly on the printer though. It states that the Admin who set up the printer had locked it. That would be me and I didn't lock it. What a performance to get there but I managed to at least turn off the auto updates and get the printers to work properly and not get interrupted by a update download that keeps failing. Once HP have a solution I may be able to turn it back on.

It's like magic. After having no success getting my printer to stop the downloading unsuccessful loop, despite all the suggestions by HP Support, when I logged in this morning my printer is working again. Gee, how did that happen overnight HP?

Hi Jadelcsr,
I would like to retract my comment about NGINX ! We managed to remote control a PC on our client's internal network yesterday but, upon navigating from within the network to the printer web management page (https://192.168.x.x), we still got the NGINX page coming up and couldn't access any settings.

We had two clients with an HP OfficeJet Pro 9022e. One was able to follow procedure 1 to turn off auto-updates.
The second client advised that they couldn't get to the gear icon to access Settings - the 'update failed' message kept coming up on the screen and they couldn't do anything else.
HP Smart didn't help us with the second printer as it kept reporting that the printer was offline.
My colleague realised the easy solution for this: restart the printer with the Ethernet cable disconnected so that the printer doesn't start the downloading cycle again. We could then follow procedure 1. I hope that this helps someone else with an Ethernet-connected printer too.

I called HP Support and they were totally unhelpful, I was shocked that the tech knew nothing of this problem. I read through the comments in this thread afterwards and tried the factory setting reset suggestion. Unfortunately, I couldn't leave it in the "Do Not Update" status because I use Instant Ink, so I turned the updates back on, but it's now working. I have no idea if the printer updated or not, but the message has been gone for 2 days (Hope I'm not jinxing myself!) I would recommend trying to reset to factory settings and see if that helps.

@Barbara77 We have instant ink too and even though I turned off the updates it is still connecting to Instant Ink and syncing our printers with that service. The only reason I didn't try the factory reset is then I would have to go through the whole process of reconnecting the printers to our Internet server in our office. But should the problem start again or if I have issues syncing with Instant Ink then I will try the reset. Thanks for the info/update.
