I am trying to print on a business card paper that is 10 mils thick. The printer has problems feeding the paper in and aligns it up poorly. I don't know if there is an adjustment for that. I think the thickness is the culprit. To test it, I sanded the leading edge, so as to reduce the thickness to 8 mils or less. This seemed to work. The paper went in all the way to its stopping point and aligned it correctly. The problem I have I can not find business card paper that is a little thinner. Avery and Staples only carry 10 mils thick. I measured them

Paper weight may indeed be the problem - and no, if the paper is too heavy, there is no workaround.

Avery 5371 = 216 gsm
Avery 28878 = 254 gsm
Avery 8371 = 230 gsm
Avery 8871 = 254 gsm
The printer can handle up to 280 gsm photo paper - but it is generally not possible to trick the printer into printing on card paper after having told it (necessarily) that the paper in the tray is photo paper.
That said, my previous two Officejet Pro printers and my current OfficeJet Pro 9025 claim the same restrictions for "card" paper weights.
Even so:
I have successfully used Media type = Brochure matte with Avery 8871 business cards.
Brochure paper (HP) is 180 gsm.
So, what to do?
Unknown...
Try the Media type suggested
and / or
If you can get a hold of Avery 5371 (at 216 gsm) and select Media type Card or Brochure, it might work.

You are welcome.
Based on what is in the Specifications, it makes sense to use what you have if you can make it work.
The world is already full of paper - we should use our good paper when we can do so.
Happy Printing.
