I simply replaced a cartridge that showed to be empty with a new cartridge that I just bought and it gives me the same message.  I tried another color that showed almost empty on the ink gauge and it showed as full.  Could the first replacement cartridge be faulty or is there some way to clean the ink receptor?  When I try to reinstall the old cartridge, the printer message says that it is out of date.  Could that have caused some blockage?  I don't use the printer frequently.  The new cartridges that came in an HP photo value pack do not have  the emblems that the old cartidges have.  Has HP changed that or could these be counterfeit?

As suggested, I cleaned the printhead and aligned the printer as suggested.  The printer will now print in color instead of just black, but the ink gauge still shows the cartridge to be empty.  Is there anything else that I can try?
