Which printers use which papers...

Years ago, HP actually published a somewhat comprehensive document that included this type of information.  It was long enough ago that HP was still selling HP linen card paper.  Smiling.  No such document exists today (as far as we've found) - We do have someone in the group that is thinking about how to create a similar reference - the problem is logistics, of course.   I can imagine the code needed to drag the information from the sources we have - might be a fun project.

Paper (not just HP) might be sold as "for InkJet Printers".  This is not misleading - it is certainly not inclusive of the information needed to make an informed choice.  The keys are the paper size, paper weight (in lbs / gsm), the paper type (for example, Brochure, Plain, Photo), and the type of surface (glossy, matte).

Of the three, most of the mistakes are made selecting a supported paper weight.

The Printer Specifications and the Datasheet generally include this information (paper type, size, weight).

Yes, it might be useful to engage with the Store.  HP having provided you (the consumer) the gsm / lb weight might be a reason a refund might be refused.  Although not everyone thinks to check the specifications for their printer, paper weight information is generally posted on the front of the package.  At the least, your comments will bring attention to the issue.  I think that reason enough to pursue the question.  Right NOW might not be ideal - the Stores are jammed with holiday traffic - your wait time to speak with a Store representative might be longer.  Check with Customer Service to see what options you have in your region.

First thing to check...

If the weight of the paper exceeds the specifications, the premium paper is not supported in this printer.

Thank you but it has printed OK on this paper previously. Would temperature or humidity affect this? Or anything else. It prints OK if I cut it down to 6*4(15*10cm) and print from the photo tray.

I should have added that the paper weight is 300g/m2.

OK - paper weight is not supported according to the Specifications.

Yes, temperature and humidity can always play a role in printing.  That said, you are in a better position to decide whether the paper or the printer are in a situation where these are a factor.  If all other printing is working as expected, these are probably not an issue this time.

If the paper works in the little photo tray (when cut down to the 4x6 inch size), then the photo tray, at least, can use the paper in spite of the specifications saying the printer does not support 300 gsm photo paper.  Might continue to do that, in fact.

Honestly, I don't know what to offer that you cannot try for yourself.

Settings, for example, likely do not help - the paper is specified as too heavy for the printer and the main tray is apparently more fussy than your photo paper tray.

If you are willing to try a lighter weight paper, the printer will likely print the three photos on the sheet.  (Ask if you need a "how-to" example for multiple photos on a sheet).

Most printers are happy to print on HP Advanced Photo paper (250 gsm) - comes in a couple of sizes, including the larger sheets and the smaller 4x6 inch.  True, "Advanced" paper does not have the heft and hand of the premium stuff.  Depends on the need, I think.

Good Luck.

Thanks. I actually bought the paper direct from HP although I don't know if I said it was for an Envy 5644. I might try going back to them to check/get a refund!!! I know how to print multiple photos on a page and it prints fine on normal paper.

I have now searched the HP store and found that the Premium Plus paper is recommended for the HP Envy 5644 even though the paper is heavier than the printer supports!! see link HP Premium Plus Semi-gloss Photo Paper-20 sht/A4/210 x 297 mm - HP Store UK. I will try to contact the store tomorrow although I note your comment re them being busy.
