Hi @SPQUEIROZ

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When turning on your HP printer and all the lights flash with an E on the display, it indicates that the printer is in an error state. Here are common error codes and their solutions for HP Smart Tank series printers:

E1/E2 Paper size mismatch

  • Cause: The printer detects that the paper size of the printing job does not match the width or length of the paper loaded.
  • Solution:
    1. Press the Cancel button to cancel printing.
    2. Load paper that matches the size of the page you want to print, or change the paper size settings in your application to match the size of the paper you are using.
    3. Print the document again.

E3 The carriage inside the printer has stalled.

  • Cause: The print carriage is obstructed.
  • Solution:
    1. Lift the ink access door.
    2. Make sure the printhead cover is properly closed and the print carriage is not obstructed.
    3. Remove any jammed paper or other objects blocking the carriage.
    4. Close the ink access door.
    5. Press the Resume button to continue printing or press the Cancel button.

E4 There is a paper jam.

  • Solution: Clear the paper jam and then press the Resume button to continue printing.

E5 The scanner is not working.

  • Solution: Turn the printer off and then on again. If the problem persists, contact HP. The printer can still print even if the scanner is not working.

E6 The printer is in an error state.

  • Solution:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Unplug the power cord.
    3. Wait for a minute, and then plug the power cord back in.
    4. Turn on the printer. If the problem persists, contact HP.

E7 One or more ink tanks are out of ink.

  • Solution: Refill the indicated ink tank that is out of ink.

E8 Fatal error.

  • Solution: Turn the printer off and then on again. If the problem persists, contact HP.

E9 Firmware update error.

  • Solution: Turn the printer off and then on again. If the problem persists, contact HP.

Reset the printer

If all control panel lights are blinking, follow these steps:

  1. Press the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not turn off, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds.
  4. Connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and to the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Thanks for the help but the solution was to change the logic board

@SPQUEIROZ

Thanks for the update—and I’m really glad you found the root cause. A flashing “E” with all lights blinking is often a general hardware fault, and in rare cases like yours, it points to a logic board failure, especially when all standard troubleshooting steps (resets, cartridge checks, firmware updates) don’t resolve it.

Replacing the logic board is definitely not a common fix, so your experience could be helpful to others facing the same issue.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. We're here to help!

Thanks again for your confirmation, and we wish you an amazing day ahead! 😊
