Error codes for HP Officejet printers/MFDs

I've posted elsewhere about a recurring problem with my HP Officejet 5742 printer/MFD - it won't power on or off reliably.

All the responses I've found so far from HP people (and others just reposting that information) refers to carrying out a 'power reset' and then updating the firmware - presumably because one possible cause is firmware corruption.

I've not seen any replies anywhere actually detailing what the HP error codes mean!

I'm assuming that if someone programmed the firmware to generate error codes there must be some purpose?

Usually the reason for creating error codes is to help with diagnosis and resolution of faults - so why doesn't HP tell owners of their printer/MFDs what the codes mean (if anything)?

While I'm at it, let me comment that all the fixes I've been able to find say 'then update the corrupted firmware.'  When part of the initial fault is that one cannot communicate reliably with the faulty device because the device firmware is corrupted, its going to be impossible to update the firmware.
