I have been using my printer every few months for over 2 years. I recently plugged it back in, and it is saying that I need to use SETUP cartridges in order for it to work. I don't know why I am receiving this message, and I would greatly appreciate the tips to get around it. The printer is an HP Officejet Pro 8028 that I received as a gift in 2018.

Hi @gperriton,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are getting an error message "Use Setup Cartridge" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 All-in-One Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

To assist better:

  • Are you using Genuine HP Ink cartridges?
  • Was there any update on the printer recently?

While you respond to that, to bypass the message on the printer the only option left is to perform an OOBE reset and re-initialize the printer.

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Support Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
