. I had color stop on me and noticed one of the colors was gone so I replaced it with a new one. The printer then showed another emty as soon as I replaced the other one. Same thing after I replaced the second one. It would not allow me to replace just the emty color catridge. It would signal another and then another emty untill I replaced all of the color cartridges. I should be able to replace just the color cartridge that is emty, so I can get my money's worth out of all the cartridges. I had what looked like 25% left in the other two when I tried replacing just the one that was out. ????

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂
As I understand you want to know why you can't change the
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
Did you know that there is no way to bypass this feature as the low ink cartridges have to be changed along with the other ink cartridges?
While you respond to that, here's what you need to know:
Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. A little ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as print-head clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature.
The printer generates these different messages as cartridges are used:
-
Thank you for installing Genuine HP cartridges! Redeem your HP Reward! – this message means a new, genuine HP cartridge has just been installed.
-
Cartridge Low – this message means you can continue printing, but HP recommends that you have a replacement cartridge on hand for when the cartridge is depleted and needs to be replaced.
-
Use Black Ink Only? or Use Color Ink Only? – these messages mean one of the cartridges is out of ink, but you can continue printing for a short time using the other cartridges. You can print either in grayscale, or in composite black. You will very soon have to replace the cartridge. This message may not appear in some cases, depending on how you print.
-
Cartridges Depleted – this message means one of the cartridges is out of ink and the printer has only enough ink in the system for servicing tasks. You must replace the cartridge to resume printing.
Step 1: Replace the empty ink cartridge
When an ink cartridge is fully depleted, you must replace it before you can print.

You state, "Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink" , two of the ink cartridges still showed ink, about 25%. Then when I changed the one that was out, it caused another to show emty. It would not let me use the rest of the other cartridges ink. Some printing takes more of one color than another, I should be able to use up my other two instead of changing all at once. I think this is just a HP rip off to sell me more of the expensive cartridges. Why can I buy just one color if it insist on me changing all at once??

Thank you for responding,
It's great to have you back 😉
I understand your concern and if there's 25% ink available, yet the ink isn't getting detected,
I recommend a firmware update for the printer to resolve this issue:
Click here to find and install the same.
Do get back to me as I have a few more tricks up my sleeve,

The ink was being detected, at least on the scale that showed status of ink. But as soon as I changed the one that looked all out then the other one suddenly appeared out, then I changed it and the last one appeared out. I had bought a three cartridge color ink box but it appeared the printer would not allow me to split the cartridges. If I had bought only the color that first showed out would it have let me change just the one cartridge?

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉
I appreciate your time and efforts,
Either way you change the cartridges, it has to be done in a set,
That said, did you install the firmware update?
(Please do, if you haven't and get back to me with the results)
If the issue persists, we may have to reset the printer,
And I shall send out the reset procedures via Private message.
Keep me posted,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.
