The black ink cartridge (63) that came with the printer needed replacement. I bought and installed a 63XL. It says that it is incompatible. Is that true? I tried all the tricks, unplugging the printer, re-setting the cartridge, cleaning the contacts - nothing. Should I go back and buy the 63 cartridge and not the XL?

A regular 63 cartridge worked well. I returned the 63XL to the store. I'll never know but I'd say it was faulty.

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

I understand that you have an HP ENVY 4522 All-in-One Printer and after replacing the black HP 63 cartridge with an HP 63 XL, the printer gives a message that the cartridge is incompatible. You have reseated the cartridge, cleaning the contacts, etc. and the issue persists. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector. Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

If the issue still persists then I suggest you to refer to the detailed steps from this HP document: 'Incompatible Ink Cartridge' or 'Ink Cartridges Missing' Error Displays.

I sincerely hope this helps. Keep me posted on how it goes, Cheers! 🙂

Thanks so much. I'm going to return to the Store and replace the print cartridge and see if that works (I've tried everything else).

I replaced and followed directions.   does not work.   I used the the plain, not XL new cartridge and it works fine.   POOR QUALITY?
