I bought my printer about a year ago. We don’t use it often so I’m just changing the ink cartridges. I’ve bought offbrand ink cartridges for my older HP printers before and never had a problem with error messages. This new printer will not accept my offbrand ink cartridge. It looks exactly like the brand name HP cartridges. Is there a workaround to this problem?

Hi @Nonnabop,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
HP has implemented a technology called Dynamic Security on many of its newer printers, including models like the HP ENVY 6055e. This feature is designed to detect non-HP or third-party ink cartridges and block their usage in order to ensure compatibility and quality control with HP-branded cartridges. Dynamic Security updates may be installed through regular firmware updates, even if off-brand cartridges previously worked on other HP printers.
To address this issue, you can try the following.
- Check for Firmware Downgrades or Rollbacks: Some users have had success with downgrading the printer’s firmware to an earlier version that doesn’t enforce Dynamic Security. You can look up if your printer allows firmware rollback, but please note that not all models offer this option.
- Disable Automatic Firmware Updates: If your printer still allows the use of third-party cartridges with the current firmware, it’s a good idea to turn off automatic updates. You can do this through the HP Smart app or the printer's settings, depending on your model. This may help avoid future updates that could restrict the use of non-HP cartridges.
- Consider HP Instant Ink Subscription: For low-usage cases, HP's Instant Ink subscription can be a convenient, cost-effective option that delivers HP cartridges automatically based on your usage. This can eliminate compatibility concerns altogether.
- Use Genuine HP Ink Cartridges: For the ENVY 6055e, HP recommends using only HP brand ink cartridges, as using compatible cartridges may void certain parts of the warranty.
These steps may help you avoid issues in the future, but for now, using HP-branded ink cartridges may be the most straightforward solution for continued functionality with your printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
