Same question. My printer is stating not connected to HP Instant Ink because it's not on wifi. My college will not allow printers to be connected to their wifi so I use the direct print option to print.

If I use the iphone HP Smart App to connect will it report the print status and re-enable the printer?

Greetings and Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Don't worry, I'm here to help!

Your printer must be connected to the Internet so we know when to send you ink. While enrolled with Instant Ink, your printer will also automatically receive and apply any necessary updates.

As your college's Wi-Fi is blocked for printers, you might have to try and connect the printer to a personal network.

The Hotspots are not recommended as Mobile hotspot does not have much bandwidth to support printer communication.

Hope this helps!
