Okay Graham! You lead the way. lol I'm returning the HP P1102w today to Office Max, and of course the extra ink cartridge I bought too. So...please lead me to the best, or should I say smallest black and white only Canon printer that'll work well with my iPad wirelessly. I'm all ears. 🙂

Guys !
I read your posts and found yet another way to make it work.
1. Go to Print + Scan Utilities (before reset the printing)
2. Click (+) sign on left
3. Select IP from menu on top.
4. Add your printer IP (you can get printer configuration by pressing and holding X button on it).
5. Select from the list HP Laser Jet 1102 (before dowload HP drivers).
6. Change name to meaninful ...
And it works and prints all pages odd and even !

I have had an HP1102w for over a year - it was brilliant - worked wirelessly with my old netgear router but have just changed router to a DSL3780 with talktalk and can only get it to work with usb cable now! Then I saw all these posts and all these problems but it's been fine before. I have followed all the videos and all the instructions to get to the HTML bit when I get an error message:
so I guess I'm stuck with the cable I didn't want. Ironically I have a colour inkjet HP B110 series and that has been fine with new router. There's just no rhyme or reason and yes, I have checked all the updated drivers/firmware etc. Takes away hours of your life!!!! Any suggestions I haven't thought of are very welcome.

I was able to set the wireless configuration on an 1102w I purchased this weekend. Here's what I did, and I'm hoping it might benefit others as well.
I used the USB cable to connect the 1102w to an iMac running 10.6. I downloaded and installed the printer driver for 1102w for Mac OS X 10.6 on the iMac. But I never was able to get the Utility tab to appear in the Printer Setup display despite some frustrating effort over an hour or so.
As a last despeate attempt I opened a Terminal window and descended down this path:
cd /Library/Printers/hp/laserjet/P1100_1560_1600Series
Inside that directory there is an executable called HTMLConfig (or something very similar).
So I did this:
./HTMLConfig
that launched a local proxy web server which (it seems) talks to the printer across the USB cable. It also launched a copy of Safari with the proper URL for talking to the proxy server. The net result was that I was abe to "talk" to the printer via the web gui even though the printer was not yet on the network.
After this I was able to navigate to the part of the UI that allows one to Enable the wireless connection, set the SSID of the printer to my home network, and set the password to the network. And after that the printer was on the network. At that point I closed out the Terminal window.
At one point the iMac seemed to get a little confused about its own WiFi connection. I turned off the AirPort, turned it back on, and that fixed it up. I don't know if this was related to running the proxy server, or just a coincidence, but thought I would mention it in case someone else ran into it.

Hey guys i have experienced the same problem of not being able to connct wirelessly to the printer.
Simply i installed the printer via usb as everyone else has stated. Then when i got into the printer utility and change the wireless settings it would freeze the screen and not allow me to go any further.
I then went back to the add printer tab with the little + and added the printer again and hp1102w-2 or something like that. I then followed the same process and it let me change the wireless settings instantly and presto i'm good to go. Then i went back and deleted the first printer that i added

Amen, brother. This is the third time I have spent an entire evening trying to get this piece of crap to work wirelessly. Finally surrendered and went out and told the dude at Besy Buy, "Give me anything but an HP printer." I took home an Epson and had it up and working wirelessly on all four of my family laptops in about 15 minutes. HP, you suck. And you too, Apple, for certifying this garbage.

Hi - I just used your post to successfully get my printer (finally) working wirelessly! So thank you. BUT, I unplugged and moved the printer and when I plugged it back in it no longer will find it wirelessly. Only using the USB. I followed your instructions again and again and still nothing. Before I throw the printer out of the window I figure I reach out to see if you have any additional advice. They don't build macs with cd drives anymore. I have run the firmware from the HP site, restarted both mac and printer and I'm only technical to a certain point and think I'm almost at my limit. I have a macbook pro retina, only about a year old running OS X 10.8.5. Help please!!!!

Hi,
Was unable to get this working until this evening, when I had a brain wave: change my default browser.
I was able to get the HTML config to launch in my browser, but had the above error message, mentioned:
This page contains the following errors:
