HP Envy 7640
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Just bought a new printer (HP Envy 7640) and installed the included ink cartridges.  I am connected to the computer with a USB cable and am not using wireless at this time.

Printer won't print a color document when I send from my computer and have the print request marked for color.  When I went thru the online help screens and printed the test page it was not printing color in the boxes either.  When I printed the Print Quality Diagnostic it did print the colors correctly.

Printer will print color when I put a document on the glass for copying and request color.

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Envy 7640 Printer is not printing in color. I understand that you prints appear faint, and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.

Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,

  1. In the program you are trying to print from, click File, and then click Print.

    The Print window opens.

  2. Open the Properties dialog box.

Depending on the software program, the button might be Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.

  3. Depending on your print job, you might consider modifying the following settings:

    • Paper Type: If you are printing on photo paper, select the type of photo paper you are attempting to print on.

    • Print Quality: If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printouts, increase the print quality. To print more quickly, decrease the print quality. These options typically include Best, Normal, and Draft modes.

    • Paper Size: If you are printing on a different size of paper than you normally print on, select the correct paper size.

    • set the grayscale off to print in color.

  4. After selecting the print settings, click OK to apply the settings, and then click Print.

Click here and refer the document to perform the above steps.

let me know how it goes.

Cheers.

sandy techy20 explained how to set the print to color on my file document.  I have set the print preferences to print color but the HP Envy 7640 still won't print the document in color.

What else can I try?  Thanks.

Hi,

as @sandytechy20 is out of the office today, I'm replying to you. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

The evidence indicates that the printer's hardware is all fine as it can copy in color.

Please download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor software. This is a free tool for Windows to help resolve issues with the printer drivers.

If the issue persists then I suggest to uninstall the existing printer drivers from the root level and then reinstall them. The following steps will help:

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
  • In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.
  • Select OK.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
  • Close Devices and Printers.
  • You may download and install the drivers from this link: www.123.hp.com

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know the outcome. All the best! 🙂

I have been fighting this same problem for months!  In addition to being able to copy in color but not print in color, I was getting a GPF when I tried to open the printer options box.  I followed your instructions, but in addition to deleting the  programs and drivers for my current  printer, I deleted them for all previous printers.  I then re-installed.  It worked!  Thank you so much for posting this solution.
