This is a little different from the other problems with printing from the photo tray.
The printer works fine with 5x7 or 4x6 either index cards or photo paper and photo tray, but when I select 3x5 index cards and photo tray, I get a message that this is a conflict and it gets switched back to the main tray. I looks as if the printer or the driver does not spport 3x5 even though it is in the selection list. It doesn't matter if Ielect 'Plain Paper' or 'Photo Paper' from the menu. This is Win8.1/64bit and MS/WORD Office 2010.

Welcome back to the HP Community Forum.
You might try the following:
Remove the paper from the regular tray, stick the Index cards in the bottom tray -- carefully move that stubborn bar over from the left to nudge up next to the cards. The bar will move, by-the-wau, although it is flimsy and hard to move; be careful with it.
Adjust the Printing Preferences
tab Paper / Quality
Paper Source > Main Tray
Paper Size > Index card 3X5
Media > Matte Greeting Card OR Brochure matte

That worked.
My apologies. I thought I had done that already but aparantly not.
It does seem strange that this one size (as far as I know) has to be in the big tray. I like the printer as I do a lot of duplex stuff for Church handouts, but this makes the second thing I don't like about it. The other is that it warns about low ink, but when one one of the ink cartridges runs dry it just keeps printing blank sheets, or sheets with wierd colors. Another printer I had would give warnings when a cartridge was low and would stop when it was completely empty.
Thanks for the guidance.

OldSooner,
You are welcome. I am glad it worked.
I have actually never used the Photo Tray for the 5X7 photos -- always just hauled the large paper out of the lower tray and put the 5X7 paper in that big tray. Works and I never thought much about it. Smiling.
You can stop the printer from warning you about the ink -- at least keep it from bugging you all the time -- by adjusting the setting.
Start the Printer Assistant shortcut (probably named Photosmart 7250 or some such thing) >
Click on the Ink icon (the one that looks like colorful Ink cartridges) >
wait for the Toolbox menu to come up ....
tab Advanced Settings >
Under Show Alerts > Click / Select Only show me ink alerts when I print
Close
I have not figured out how to make the printer smart enough to stop printing if we are not willing to change the ink when the printer warns us it is time.
I used to tell the kids, "Everyone, listen: This is your warning."
Next thing I heard: "It's not fair!"
Smiling. They were usually right.
