I have 4 x 6 photo paper loaded in the photo tray.  When I click print it moves the tray forward and backwards, but sends an error message that no paper is load, when it is loaded.  Appreciate any help.

Welcome to the HP User Community.

If the printer software is loaded,

If the printer passes its diagnostics and can (for example) output a test print,

"No paper" might indicate a settings error.

Places to check -

If you need more help, please provide the following information:

How heavy is the photo paper?  What type of print surface?   HP or other high-grade brand?

Importantly, have you used this paper before - and did it work as expected?

What are the paper size & type settings in the Embedded Web Server (EWS) for Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper?

Related:

Have you tried reloading the paper in the tray and then immediately editing / modifying / setting (resetting) the paper size and type on the printer display panel?

Which program / application are you using to view and submit the job?

In the Settings:

Borderless?

What is the exact selected paper size name ?

What is the exact paper type name?

Is the Source (Tray) set to Automatic or is the Photo Tray selected?

I completely bypassed using the photo paper tray and fed the photo paper into the printer from the paper tray and it did print for me.  Brian

Update...

We crossed paths...

Perhaps the photo tray needs to be removed from the printer and reseated.

Sounds like the tray is not being detected or that the paper in the tray is not detected.

Did you make the necessary tray and paper changes in EWS / printer display before using the main tray for the photo paper?

Thanks for the information.

OK - Assuming that "HP Printer app" means you are using HP Smart for Windows.

One customer contributed the following good advice for the 7800 series:

.... When you insert your 4x6 paper push it in until it stops.

Leave the gap closest to you so the 1 silver sensor dot is uncovered and it detects the right size every time.

No Joy?

If you have not done so, that is, if the full driver is not yet installed in Programs and Features,

(then)

Please install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

Download and Save

HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software

Basic Instructions - Install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Preparation

  • If the printer software is still / already installed, Uninstall the printer software  from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features > Restart the computer and log in – Reference Uninstall HP printer software and drivers

After the printer software is uninstalled, check that the printer is not still lurking in Devices and Printers

If the printer is listed, Right-Click on the printer and "Remove" > Restart the computer and sign in.

  • If using VPN, shut it off to install software.  NOTE >> If you don’t know what this is, you are not using a VPN – ignore this part.

  • Reminder:  If using USB cable between printer and computer, disconnect the cable before installing software.  Later... Connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation procedure).

  • Observation:  It is possible (assuming your Wireless Network is stable) that using a Wireless connection to install the printer software might work better than using an Ethernet Connection.   Personal choice - the Wireless connection method is recommended when you face insurmountable issues installing the software.

Installation

  • Download and Save the Full Feature Software installation package or the Easy Start Software
  • Open File Explorer
  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

If using Easy Start

  • Skip any extra software / offers you do not want – Wording varies as does the number of times you have to “skip” or opt-out of various options.
  • When asked, opt for "Full Software and Drivers" (exact wording might vary).
  • If, after the Full Software and Drivers option is selected, the installation terminates (suddenly stops and disappears – never comes back): Open your Downloads folder > Look for and Right-Click on the full Web installation package and “Run as Administrator

========================================================================

Recheck the settings and try again.

Back to the original questions...

If the error is due to settings not understood by the printer,

(then)...

Recheck the EWS method to see what the printer thinks is loaded in the tray.

For example, in this printer,

EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

================================================================

Sorry - I meant to ask:

Check the name of paper size you selected in the printer app

Why the question?

Normally, if you select the wrong paper, you will get an error that indicates a paper mis-match.

In this case, I wanted to check that you did not, for example, select paper size = 4x6 Index

What?

There might be more than one 4x6 in paper in the list

When printing on Photo Paper, it is important to not select a paper size that includes "Index" in the name.

Example - Partial Paper Size list

DragonFur_3-1660491978878.png

================================================================

Check the Paper type selected in media

Check the Shortcut selected in More Settings

Why the questions?

It is important that the paper type and the paper size are compatible and are not creating a conflict.

This is actually a continuation of the earlier question about paper size NOT including the word Index.
