Officejet Pro X451dw (CN463A)
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

I’m attempting to update the firmware on my HP Officejet Pro X451dw (CN463A) but the firmware updater fails with the error “This Firmware Updater does not contain upgrades for your device.” Specifically:

  1. Using EWS I confirmed that my current firmware is very old (it lists the firmware version of BWP1CN1315FR, which means 1315FR, right?, which dates from around the time I bought the printer, about 3 years ago).
  2. I downloaded the latest firmware update (`OJP_X451dw_R1640A_updated.dmg`), copied `HP Firmware Updater` to /Applications, and then ran it.
  3. It shows my printer in the Device Discovery list. I selected it and clicked Continue.
  4. It thinks for a while, displaying “Retrieving information…”
  5. After waiting for (roughly) 30 seconds, it displays “This Firmware Updater does not contain upgrades for your device.”

Any suggestions?

Hi,

See the following document, firmware version R1640A is not a standard firmware, it can only be installed on printers using version 1548AR with a Cartridge Problem while using After Market ink cartridges:

This document applies to you ONLY if all three of the following conditions are true:

Your printer is in the table at the top of this document. Other HP printers are not affected.
You are using an aftermarket supply that contains a non-HP security chip (this may be a refilled or remanufactured HP cartridge with a non-HP chip). Only cartridges that lack HP’s security chip are affected.
A Cartridge Problem error message displays. Other error messages are not related.

To update the printer to the firmware 1548AR which is the latest standard firmware follow these steps:

  • From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Network button to display the IP address or host name.

  • Open a Web browser, and in the address line, type the IP address or host name as it displays on the printer control panel. Touch the Enter key on the computer keyboard. The EWS opens.

  • Under the Printer Update column press Check for Updtes now and follow the steps on screen.

Thanks for clarifying that (btw I always use HP cartridges).

I don’t see any “Printer Update column”. Here’s a screen shot of the root of my EWS.

EWS Root.png

If I cycle through the tabs shown here (Home, Web Services, Network, Tools, Settings), none of the pages contain the word “update”.

btw The docs that came with the printer (Officejet Pro X451 And X551 Series Printers / User Guide / ENWW) don’t mention any ability to software update via EWS. Rather, they say:

> Software and firmware updates and installation instructions for this
> product are available at http://www.hp.com/go/support. Click Support &
> Drivers, click the operating system, and then select the download for
> the product.

which is why I was on the HP web site looking for a software update in the first place.

I’m on a Mac and thus can’t use that directly )-: Is there a Mac equivalent? If not I’ll set this up in a VM and do things from there.

That installed just fine. Many thanks!

Just for my own info, how did you find that? When I searched the HP support area in the obvious way, the only thing it returned was the above-mentioned R1640A firmware )-:

You're welcome, great to see you were able to update the printer!

the file is no longer availble at HP support area, Google and common sense while searching were quite helpful to locate the right file.
