Indicated cartridges blocked for containing a non HP chip. Is there a workaround? Been using these cartridges for 2 years, now all of a sudden the printer won't work. Working from home office came to a dead stop and I can't afford to be forced to buy $400 in toner cartridges.. Thanks for the Christmas surprise HP!

Hi @mifranc,
I'd like to help!
I understand you're unable to print using non HP ink cartridges
I recommend you update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website with the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.
Hope this helps!

@SaiSaiSai, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.
I understand you are not able to use non-HP ink cartridges.
Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your computer.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Also, check if this is a Dynamic security enabled printer. The Firmware Update may prevent supplies with non-HP chips or circuitry from working.
Note: For printers manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 dynamic security will not be enabled by the firmware. Please note that HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges.
You may refer to this document - HP Printers - Dynamic Security Enabled Printers
If the issue persists, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for further assistance.
You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.

This has still not fixed my printer. I have been using the same cartidges for years and when the new Windows 11 update came out, I can no longer print. I have all the protection settings in supply settings turned off. I have updated the firmware twice. My tech support is out of warranty but it's not really fair for you to update my out of date computer with a problem that requires me to call tech support which I have to pay for. There is no firmware to roll back to on the HP website so I cannot go back to a version that works.

I understand your concern. However, Windows 11 update is not from HP but from Microsoft. This update has nothing to do with the ink cartridge you use.
Yes, the firmware cannot be rolled back to the previous version.
Kindly go through my previous post for assistance.

I did update my firmware. It automatically updated around the time windows 11 came out. I have tried updating it as well from your post. None of this solves the issue. I have Cartridge Policy and Cartrige protection turned off but it is still blocking it. MFP M281cdw is my printer model. I have turned off every setting I can turn off. Again, my cartridges worked until the Nov 20 firmware update and now they do not and I cannot roll back to the previous firmware.

I have a HP Officejet. Worked perfectly until yesterday when I did a Windows 11 update and now have the same message you have above. Cartridges are nearly full and now absolutely useless! I cant believe HP think this is acceptable and the link provided below to supposedly remedy this does not work. Never ever purchasing another HP product again. The hours I have spent today trying to fix this is ridiculous.

Hi Jay_g24,
Is there really a solution to this problem? The direction to go to HP support, download firmware and update the printer do not resolve the fundamental issue - what worked yesterday (printer cartridges) doesn't work today (software/firmware update) to force us to use HP-only products. This was not the original agreement made when I purchased the printer. I was quite pleased with the performance - for decades I only purchased HP printers. Now the agreement has fundamentally been altered without prior notice or consent. This must be fixed or, for me, I will purchase another printer who considers me a valuable and respected customer instead of another opportunity to drive up prices to capture "lost revenue" from resellers with similar performing products.
What will it be HP?
