my printer will not run one standard cartridge and one xl cartridge together,,,is this normal.. do i have to use both cartridges of the same volume...many thanks..

The low ink warning on a new cartridge would generally be caused by a refilled or remanufactured cartridge. It may help to remove the offending cartridge and clean the cartridge contacts as shown in the document here.

Your Deskjet 2540 printer should not have any problems running a mixture of XL and regular size cartridges, in fact HP sells a combination pack of the large black and standard size color.
What is the error message you see on your printer?
Can you print with either cartridge installed by itself?
