can you stop a laser printer cleaning itself every time you open the paper tray.I'm printing on long thin bits of card, and each time i put one card in the bottom tray it goes through a cleaning stage. can i stop this? Tray 1 doesn't take the card very well it keeps getting jammed, so tray 2 works well but takes alot longer as it keeps cleaning

Constant cleaning cycles are usually caused by a paper sure mismatch.  If fox example you have the paper size setting on the printer set at letter size but the actual media is narrow then the printer will process a cleaning page to ensure that there is no toner left on the print mechanisms.  Misfeeding will also cause this, usually the result of media that is difficult for the printer to pickup and multiple pick cycles are generated to feed one sheet. In this case you will hear the roller make multiple rotations when feeding.
