error came out of nowhere.  no issues with ink.  what gives?

the website has this error posted numerous times but doesn't really point out the cause.

How do I fix this?

I have no interest in ink subscriptions, if that is the ploy...

@dtmagoon .

Update the printer firmware and you can find it for the operating system you are using from the following link:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer-series/790...

Clear the error by resetting the printer without the ink cartridges.

  1. Open the cartridge access door or lid.

    • If the carriage moves to the center of the printer, continue with these steps.

    • If the carriage does not move to the center of the printer, close the access door or lid. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and power source, wait 60 seconds, and then reconnect the power cord to the printer and a wall outlet. Turn the printer on, and then continue with these steps.

  2. Remove the cartridges.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  5. Wait 60 seconds.

  6. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and the printer.

    NOTE:

HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  7. Turn the printer on.

  8. Reinsert the cartridges, and then close the cartridge access door or lid.

  9. Follow the steps to align the printer, if prompted.

Hello @dtmagoon .
What is the model of the printer you are using?
Do you use the printer via USB cable or via Wifi?

It is an OfficeJet Pro 8710.

It has been on wifi for a few days, and was using it before with a USB cable.

The printer was inherited, and I have been using it for over six months with no issues.

I figured it out after some time waiting on the help line.

The printer was inherited and tied to an ink subscription service.

Will buy new ink cartridges from the store and bypass this mess, and if that doesn't address the problem I'll toss it in the dumpster and buy something from a different company.
