Hello jsptherapy,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I see you are looking to apply a default to the Officejet Pro 8610 for black ink only. This can not be done on the printer, however, you can setup a pre-set / change the printing setting on the computer. What is the Operating System you are printing from, Windows or Mac?

I think this screen shot will be helpful.

printing in black only

It does not work in OSX v. 10.11. This method does not describe the options available to me on the latest Mac update. Any fixes for El Capitan?

I have HP Office Jet Pro 8610.  I wonder how I can use ink cartridges economically.  If I change printing to black and white mode (instead of color) and use color only infrequently, will it prolong the life time of ink cartridges?  I heard that as soon as one of the colors is used up I have to replace the cartridge.  If I print in black and white mode, will it make black color run out fast and I'll have to replace cartridge anyway?  Then I would rather use color print.  I print learning materials for little children and they appreciate color.

Thanks ahead for any help!

Marina
