Hi @atmane123 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the "Service Error 49" on your HP LaserJet MFP M236dw can be frustrating. This error is typically caused by issues with the printer's firmware, print jobs stuck in the queue, or sometimes a corrupted print driver.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord and leave it unplugged for about 10 minutes.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

2. Clear the Print Queue

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers on your Windows 10 PC.
  • Right-click your HP LaserJet printer and select See what's printing.
  • If there are any print jobs in the queue, right-click and cancel them.
  • If the jobs won't clear, restart the print spooler:
    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Locate Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Restart.

3. Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver

  • Go to Device Manager on your PC (right-click the Start menu and choose Device Manager).
  • Under Printers, right-click your HP LaserJet printer and select Uninstall device.
  • Once uninstalled, disconnect the printer, restart your computer, and then reconnect the printer.
  • Download the latest drivers for the HP LaserJet M236dw from the HP website and reinstall them.

4. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Sometimes, a firmware update can resolve persistent issues like error 49.
  • Go to HP Smart or visit the HP Support website to check if there is a firmware update available for your printer.
  • Install the update if one is available.

5. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

  • You can perform a hard reset of the printer to factory settings. Here's how:
    • On the printer's control panel, navigate to the Settings or Network Settings menu.
    • Find the Restore Defaults or Factory Reset option and confirm the reset.

6. Disconnect External Devices

  • If you have any USB drives, external hard drives, or other peripherals connected to the printer, disconnect them to see if this resolves the issue.

49 errors can be caused by hardware, firmware or driver issues.

You state you have tried everything which makes it near impossible to suggest anything as I am not going to type a hundred suggestions when I have no idea what you have tried. Post back the steps you have already tried, IN DETAIL and I can make a few suggestions, likely things you have not found on the internet.

If you find the information provided useful or solves your problems, help other users find the solution easier by giving kudos and marking my post as an accepted solution.

Thank you for your reply!

Unfortunately, nothing seems to solve the problem. I am beginning to think the firmware update is what might have ruined my printer. If you happen to have the old firmware of this printer, I would be much grateful
