I am very frustrated with the dialog boxes for the Mac.  I want to use double-sided printing as a default in MS Word.  In order to print double-sided, I need to go to page setup, select letter sized paper (instead of the default which is index card letter), then go to print and layout to select duplex.  I WANT TO SAVE THESE SETTINGS and print several files at once.

Please help - I'm so very frustrated...

I already tried the various suggestions in "support" -- they don't match my dialog boxes.  I would very much like to see the dialog boxes demonstrated in the video.

Let me reiterate:  Deskjet Pro 7740 with a Mac.  If the 2-sided checkbox were showing, I'd use it!

Note: I can do 2-sided printing from Firefox, but in order to do it from MS Word, I need to setup the page with "letter" rather than the default "index card letter", then go through the printer dialog box to select layout, and 2 sided printing.

@FMENDELS,

It looks like you were interacting with @The_Fossette, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out,
I'm the Jeet_Singh & I'm at your service.

As I understand you are able to print using firefox but having issues printing from word, don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resolve this issue.

From the file used to print click the File menu and select Print.
NOTE: The Print window might be minimized. Press on Show Details to show any available print option.

To select the binding type click the lowest selection box listed as the name of the program (e.g. TextEdit)
Will appear as Copies & Pages within Microsoft Office applications.

Select Layout from the drop-down menu.

Set the Two-Sided option as Long-Edge binding (Portrait), or Short-Edge binding (landscape).

You may save the settings for future use by clicking Presets > Save Current Settings as Preset... Any used preset will remain default till another preset will be used.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

This is a start - the settings in the print dialog were saved as a preset.  HOWEVER, the preset didn't work because the DEFAULT PAPER in page settings is "index card letter paper" and I can't figure out how to make the default "letter", instead.

So... the question is how do I set the default paper in Tray1 to letter rather than "index card letter"?  The printer will not print on both sides if it thinks the paper is index card.

@FMENDELS,

Thanks for the update,

In this scenario, I would suggest you could try to check the print settings - HP Printers - How to Print on Both Sides of the Paper (Mac) (Duplexing)

If the issue persists, I would suggest you could try to remove the printer from the queue and then add it as a Airprint:

Confirm you are using AirPrint by adding the printer in System Preferences.

  1. Click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Print & Scan or Printers & Scanners.

Figure : Example of the Printers & Scanners window

Example of the Printers & Scanners window
  2. Check if your printer name displays in the Printers list, and then do one of the following steps.

    • If your printer is listed, remove and re-add the printer to confirm it is set up for AirPrint. Click the printer name, click the minus sign to delete the printer, click the plus sign , click Add Printer or Scanner, click the printer name and then continue to the next step.

    • If your printer is not listed, click the plus sign, click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer, and then continue to the next step.

    • If your printer is not listed in the Add Printer or Scanner window, go to the Frequently asked questions in this document to resolve connection issues, try to add the printer again, and then continue to the next step.

  3. Confirm AirPrint or Secure AirPrint displays in the Use or Print Using menu, and then click Add.

Figure : AirPrint displays in the Use menu

Select AirPrint from the Use menu
  4. Open a document or photo, click File, and then click Print.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

If they did, that’s awesome!

That’ll help us and others see that we’ve got the answers!

Good Luck.

I tried this with one change: After searching the Apple forum, I found that I should "reset printing system", then reinstall the printer.

IT WORKED!  At least, for now...

Thank you for sticking with me on this!
