Hi @Sally-Jo,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are getting the "Printer Failure" error on the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can sometimes occur after changing ink cartridges, especially if the printer has trouble recognizing or initializing the new cartridges. Here are some troubleshooting steps that may help:
Restart the Printer:
- Power off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on. Then, try printing again.
Reinstall the Ink Cartridges:
- Open the ink cartridge access door and remove each cartridge.
- Inspect the cartridges and ensure they have the protective tape removed (but avoid touching the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles).
- Reinsert the cartridges carefully, ensuring they click securely into place.
Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Outdated firmware can sometimes cause printer issues after changing cartridges. Update the firmware if you can access the printer’s settings menu, or use the HP Smart app or HP website to download any available updates.
Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts:
- Power off the printer, remove the cartridges, and gently clean the copper contacts on each cartridge and inside the cartridge slot with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. This can help if there’s an issue with the electrical contact.
Reset the Printer to Factory Settings:
- Resetting the printer to its factory settings can sometimes clear up error messages.
- From the printer's touchscreen, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
Try a Printhead Cleaning:
- Since the 8600 series has a removable printhead, try running the Clean Printhead option from the printer menu (under Printer Maintenance).
- If that doesn’t help, you can carefully remove and inspect the printhead for clogs or debris if you feel comfortable doing so.
