Hi @Jimbeau2,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Changing the status of your HP OfficeJet 5740 printer from offline to online typically involves a series of troubleshooting steps. Here's what you can try:
Check the Printer's Physical Connection:
- Ensure that the printer is turned on.
- Check if the printer is properly connected to your computer via USB or to your network if it's a network printer. For wireless connections, make sure the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows):
- HP provides a free tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows that can help diagnose and resolve printing problems. Download and run this tool to see if it can fix the issue.
Set the Printer to "Online" Manually (Windows):
- Go to the Control Panel and open 'Devices and Printers'.
- Right-click on the HP OfficeJet 5740 printer and select 'See what's printing'.
- If there's a checkmark next to 'Pause Printing' or 'Use Printer Offline', click it to remove the checkmark and set the printer to online.
Clear the Print Queue:
- Sometimes, a stuck print job can cause the printer to appear offline. Clear the print queue by canceling all documents and try again.
Restart the Print Spooler Service (Windows):
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Scroll down and double-click on 'Print Spooler'.
- Click 'Stop', wait a few seconds, and then click 'Start' again. Optionally, you can restart your computer.
Check the Printer's Network Connection (Network Printers):
- Print a Wireless Network Test report or a Network Configuration Page. This can usually be done directly from the printer’s control panel. Check the report to see if there are any problems with the printer's network connection.
- Ensure that the printer's IP address is correctly configured in your printer settings on your computer.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Make sure you have the latest drivers installed for your printer. You can download the latest printer drivers from HP's official website.
Reinstall the Printer:
- If none of the above steps work, try removing and re-adding the printer on your computer. This can sometimes reset any errors and bring the printer back online.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
