Printer:
HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer series
Preparation
If you have not done so:
Download, save, and install Adobe Reader DC
- HINT: Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software
Download, save, and install the Software for the printer:
(157.2 MB)
After the installation is complete > Restart the computer and log in
Option > Set Copy to "darker"
On the printer panel:
Copy > Settings icon (spikey wheel) >
Touch Lighter / Darker > slide to new setting > touch Done
Option > Scan the document then print
Scan the document into your computer as a PDF file.
Print a new copy using the controls in the software to improve the copy.
User Guide > Sections
Scan > Chapter 4, Page 40
Print Documents > Chapter 3, Page 29
If using the Printer software to Scan a Document or Photo:
Printer Assistant shortcut icon on the Desktop named for your printer >
Scan a Document or Photo >
Save as PDF (wording may vary) >
Advanced >
Under tab Scan:
Adjust settings, including Brightness and Contrast >
OK (to exit Advanced)
Open document in Adobe Reader DC
Properties >
OPTIONAL: tab Paper / Quality > set Quality to "Best" > OK
Set other options and print
Understand that "Best" takes a lot longer (more time) than does draft or normal printing.

Adobe Reader DC does not require a login to use the basic Viewer functions.

I have the HP Office Jet 8720. I cannot find any way, either when printing from my computer, or when copying a page from the flatbed to either lighten or darken a copy. My computer is an Mac OS X El Capitan.

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to configure the Copy Defaults.
General. Example
Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Copy > Settings > Default Settings
Adjust the slider bar to lighten / darken
Apply to save any changes
