I removed the paper tray completely from an 

HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 All-in-One Printer and now cannot replace it - it does not go in smoothly and I do not wish to force it

I would be grateful for help

The trick is to insert the tray to run along the shelves on each side of the lower part of the space, just above the surface of table or desk where printer is sited.

@MRC4, Welcome to HP Support Community!

 

Check for any obstruction in the tray path. Also, check the tray for any broken parts.

 

Use a flashlight to check if there is any obstruction inside the printer.
