In the middle of a print job, my printer stopped and threw the error "Older Generation Print Cartridge." It literally printed one side of a page perfectly, then would not print the second page. My ink levels now read 0 for all cartridges, even though there was no characteristic dimming of the ink in the print job that would indicate low ink levels. I know there's ink in there. Googling to troubleshoot the error led me to this link: https://support.ldproducts.com/en_us/how-to-downgrade-hp-952xl-printer-firmware-HJEImt18P telling me to downgrade the firmware. However, these instructions aren't for my model, the 8720. I can't find instructions on how to obtain the software and downgrade the 8720. Can you help?

Hi @werl,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand that you're experiencing issues with your HP Officejet Pro 8720 printer, specifically the "Older Generation Print Cartridge" error and inaccurate ink level readings. While downgrading firmware can be a potential solution, it's essential to be cautious as it may void warranties or cause other issues. Before attempting any firmware downgrade, I recommend contacting HP support for assistance.
However, there are a few other troubleshooting steps you can try first.
- Restart the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then, plug it back in and turn it on. Check if the error persists.
- Reset the Printer: Some HP printers have a reset option in the settings. Navigate to the printer menu or settings on the control panel and look for a reset or restore option. This might clear any false error messages.
- Check for Firmware Updates: While you're cautious about downgrading, it's also a good idea to make sure you have the latest firmware. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues. You can check for updates on the official HP support website.
- Manually Check Ink Levels: If the printer is not accurately displaying ink levels, check the cartridges manually. Remove them and visually inspect to ensure there is sufficient ink. Clean the cartridge contacts and reseat them properly.
Remember to back up any important settings or configurations before attempting firmware changes, and proceed with caution as it involves potential risks to the printer's functionality.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
