@gastrobob, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message “Problem with printer or printer system” typically indicates a printhead or ink system failure. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and, if needed, remove or replace the printhead on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series printer.

Reset the Printer

Sometimes a hard reset can clear system errors.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.

If the error persists, proceed to the next steps.

Check Ink Cartridges

Faulty or improperly seated cartridges can trigger system errors.

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove and reinsert each cartridge firmly.
  • Ensure you're using genuine HP ink cartridges.
  • Clean the cartridge contacts with a lint-free cloth if needed.

Removing or Replacing the Printhead

If the error persists, the printhead may need cleaning or replacement.

⚠️ Important:

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series uses a non-user-removable printhead. However, if you're experienced, here’s a general guide based on similar models:

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Open the top cover. The carriage should move to the left.
  3. Wait until the carriage stops moving.
  4. Lift the printhead latch.
  5. Gently lift and remove the printhead.
  6. Shake the new printhead (still in packaging) 6 times.
  7. Remove protective caps and insert into the correct slot:
    • Black/Yellow on the left
    • Magenta/Cyan on the right
  8. Press down until it clicks.
  9. Close the latch and top cover.
  10. Wait for alignment page to print.
