Why do I have to switch off the printer at the socket when I want it to be off?
Pressing the power button displays printer shutting down then it just resets and comes back on again. Happens all the time.

Hi @Crookers,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e is not shutting down properly and instead resets when you press the power button, here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Proper Shutdown Procedure
- To turn off the printer, press and hold the Power button until the printer displays a message saying it is shutting down. If it resets instead, try the following steps.
2. Firmware Update
- Check if your printer has the latest firmware installed:
- Go to the HP Support website.
- Enter your printer model and check for any available firmware updates. Install any updates if they exist, as they may fix the shutdown issue.
3. Power Cycle the Printer
- Sometimes, performing a power cycle can help:
- Turn off the printer using the power button.
- Unplug the printer from the wall outlet.
- Wait for about 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
4. Factory Reset
- If the issue persists, you can perform a factory reset:
- On the printer control panel, navigate to Settings.
- Select Restore Factory Defaults or Reset All Settings.
- Confirm the reset and wait for the printer to restart.
5. Check for Sleep Mode Settings
- Ensure that the printer is not set to go into a sleep mode or power-saving mode that could cause it to appear as if it’s resetting.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Not the best of outcomes - following these instructions we have gone from a printer that was working (just would not turn off) to a printer no longer printing anything (not even reports from the menu).
Firstly its a brand new printer (few weeks).
Firmware is latest.
I did the reset you suggested and now it wont print at all. I had to manually connect it to the network and the HP cloud page (says "Needs attention") disagrees with the HP Smart application (says printer "Ready").
Steps I took:
1. Reset (Restore to factory settings actually).
- Frozen after "Restore Successful" message (left 10 mins)
2. Power cycled
- Frozen on "Preparing" (left 10 mins)
3. Power cycled
- Stuck on Return to Set Up website ? (URL no displayed so no sure which site to go to as don't have quick setup instruction sheet)
4. Manually configured (language/timezone etc) then connected to my network & used HP Smart application on a PC to continue set up
- finished OK but Estimated supply levels on HP Smart page blank.
5. Send prints from 2 PC's & both prints stuck in their respective queues.
- Printer showing online & ready
6. Power cycled (this time from power button which now works)
- Print jobs deleted from queues (without intervention!)
7. Run diagnostics from HP Smart when reported printer back online
- "Diagnosis complete and no issues were found
- No test page was printed dispite requesting it
8. Tried printing a status report from printer directly
- Printer error occurred: C0.05.9C.0B
- requests contacting support
9. I thought it may be because the ink cartridges needed resetting so opened the lid.
- They remain in the parked (RHS) position so cant get to them.
PRINTER IS USELESS NOW. Kindly send a replacement.

Contacted HP support on Whatapp & whilst waiting tried a Firmware reset again. This time it was successful in getting printing back online but still have the original problem, namely I can't switch it off the the power button. So back to square one.
